Keeley and Wire set me up with a room at the hotel they are staying at. They no longer live in Vegas so Wire doesn’t have a great stash of money, but he gives me the three thousand dollars in cash he has on his person. Apparently, he had a good day at one of the craps tables on the strip. I get a burner phone and a few items of clothing—a pack of underwear, two pairs of pants and a pack of t-shirts. My entire wardrobe for the rest of my life costs me all of 40 bucks. They offer to stay around until I figure out some sort of plan and Wire tells me he’d use all the resources he has to assist me. It’s nice to have friends in high places. He may no longer hold the title President of the original chapter of the Wings of Diablo, but he is the President of the nomad chapter. He only needs to call in a few favors and he would give me everything that he possibly can.

“What I need right now is a computer.” Luckily, Keeley had packed one.

“Here it is. Keep it if you need to.” She hands me her MacBook and the charger.

“I’ll need it for at least the two weeks.” I take the electronics from her.

“Josip, could I ask you a question? Personal?”

“Of course.”

“If you knew she was off limits, why did you keep pursuing her? I know you are in love with her now, but I’m sure that took time.”

I close my eyes and think back on when I had first met Bella. “I didn’t know she was off limits until a few weeks after we met. But even if I had, I still would have wanted her. She’s peace and purity. She’s genuine. She’s cares just because she can. Even though she’s lived a life alone, she was quick to open up to me and it was almost involuntary that I opened up to her. I’ve never felt like I could truly just fucking be me with anyone. I couldn’t give that up. I won’t.”

She smiles at me and reaches around to give me a hug. This is the second time in less than a week someone has just hugged me. It feels weird.

“I understand. We’ll leave you to work. Let me know if you need anything.”

“Thank you. I will never forget this.” I pull away from her and walk over to the table in the hotel room and both of them leave. I get started with the most intense research I have ever done.

I go straight to the dark web to see if there is any more chatter about the ransoms. I didn’t really know much about maneuvering around this platform, for the longest time Sven is the one I went to for this kind of information. I can’t do that now.

There is a forum that is used by crime lovers, a really morbid place. There are times I would be able to get information from that, today is not one of those days.
